The Park Tote Road will be closed to through traffic between Katahdin Stream Campground and Foster Field on Tuesday, June 30th for road work. This closure is necessary to replace culverts and restore the streambed at a crossing near Tracy Pond. The closure will begin at 7:00 a.m. and remain in effect for the day, and potentially into the following day.
The Tote Road will be open for northbound travel as far as Katahdin Stream, and southbound travel will end at Daicey Pond. Campers travelling to Daicey Pond, Kidney Pond, Foster Field, and Nesowadnehunk will need to access these facilities through the Matagamon gate. Campers staying at these locations who plan to hike Katahdin trails should consider an alternative day or access the trails earlier than 7:00 a.m. They should also be prepared to travel north to access their campsite following their hike.
We recognize that this work will be disruptive to the experience of some of our visitors. Environmental concerns and regulations were a top priority when scheduling and planning this work. We prioritizes minimizing impacts to naturals resources while attempting to reduce visitor impact. Conducting this work now lessens the potential for a future emergency road closure and allows us to restore the streambed to a more natural state, benefiting aquatic life.
Leading up to the 30th, visitors may see oversized vehicles and trailers in the Park on Thursday and Friday, June 25th and 26th, and Monday, June 29th.
