Commemorating Ralph Heath

Sixty years ago today, Chimney Pond Ranger Ralph Heath lost his life while attempting to rescue a stranded hiker below the Knife Edge. Between late in the evening on October 28th and early in the morning on October 29th, 1963, Ranger Heath made two separate attempts to rescue Margaret Ivusic in the midst of a violent Nor’easter. Both he and Ivusic ultimately succumbed, Heath to the elements and Ivusic to injuries sustained. Today, we honor Ranger Heath and keep the memory of his dedication and sacrifice to Baxter State Park alive.
